Wireless Security Surveillance for Parma High School
Organization:Parma High SchoolLocation:Parma, ItalyType of Business:EducationProducts Used:USR5450 802.11g Wireless Turbo Access Point, USR5410 802.11g Wireless Turbo PC Card, USR5416 802.11g Wireless Turbo PCI CardThe ChallengeParma High School needed to implement video surveillance as part of a security enhancement program. Because of the school’s construction, it was going to be very expensive to run conduit and cabling throughout the school. Also, for the computer room, in the historic section of the building, running cable was totally impractical. Another connection method was needed to support the video cameras being placed in key hallways and entrances. Key to staying within budget was to find a wireless solution compatible with their infrastructure requirements.
The SolutionUSRobotics worked closely with MC Informatica to develop an integrated solution to meet all the requirements of Parma High School. The recommendation accepted by Parma included 5 IP web-cameras (JVC model VN30C-U) with vertical and horizontal remote positioning, motion detecting monitoring software, 5 USRobotics Multi-Function Access Points, two USRobotics Wireless Routers and 18 Wireless PCI Cards. This delivered the surveillance security and wireless connectivity Parma required. The BenefitsEach of the IP Web Cameras was installed with an associated 802.11g Turbo Multi-Function Access Point configured in Client Mode. This allowed them to plug directly into the Ethernet port of the camera and be recognized as a standard connection. Critical was the flexibility to detach the original antennas and replace them with directional antennas to provide a more focused beam for the wireless connection. The Access Points connect securely to one of the Turbo Wireless Routers using USRobotics powerful 256-bit encryption. This eliminates the possibility of hackers intercepting or otherwise interfering with the security cameras or video streams. Eighteen 802.11g Turbo PCI cards were installed in the PCs in the historical building’s computer room, along with a separate 802.11g Turbo Router. Configured as a separate wireless network, Parma took advantage of MAC address authentication to assure only authorized PCs and “guests”with laptops can utilize the available network resources. As a result of the creative solution designed by MC Informatica and USRobotics, Parma High School has met their requirement for improved security for their students. And, as a result of the powerful security of the USRobotics Turbo line of 802.11g wireless products, they have a network that is safe from hackers and other non-authorized users.
